M.A.T. - Overview

Master's Degree Leading to Initial Certification
The Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) degree provides initial teacher preparation at the master's degree level for qualified candidates who hold a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution.  The program is designed for college graduates whose undergraduate degrees did not include professional education preparation.  Successful completion of the M.A.T. program leads to a T-5 Georgia Certification.

Georgia College offers the M.A.T. in the following areas:

M.A.T. in Secondary Education with a Concentration in
Business Education
Political Science

M.A.T. in Special Education

1. Pass an on-site writing assessment
2. Meet minimal undergraduate cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on all course work attempted, at each institution attended, in which letter grades were awarded
3. Pass (or exempt) the GACE Basic Assessment

In order to be admitted to any of the M.A.T. programs, the applicant should complete the following:

  1. University Admissions Form including application fee, if applicable
  2. Two professional recommendations (pdf) using the College of Education format
  3. Official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended (except GC)
  4.  Verification of immunization
  5. M.A.T.-Middle Grades only: Submit passing GACE Content Assessment Scores in MIddle School Mathematics and Middle School Science (Tests 013 and 014)
  6. Background check--All applicants must pass a background check.  Persons convicted of felonies or crimes of moral turpitude are not eligible for programs.
  7. Applicant needs to submit testing document showing completion of GACE 350 – Program Entry Ethics as required for admission to a program.  To do this, the applicant will need to create a MyPSC account at www.gapsc.com using his legal name as shown on a driver’s license or other ID document, and select testing Reason #7, “I am taking the Georgia Educator Ethics assessment.”, select Georgia College & State University on the Program tab, and select GACE 350 on the Assessment tab.  Then he should register for the assessment at www.gace.ets.org/ethics, pay the $30 fee online, indicate Georgia College & State University as a score recipient, complete the seven modules in 2.5-3 hours, and include the results document in the application packet.
  8. The applicant needs to complete the PreService_Application_Package available here  (pdf).   If accepted to the program for which application is being made, Georgia College will submit these forms to the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (PSC) to request a Pre-Service certificate.  The PSC does not charge a fee for these forms, which give the PSC permission to perform a background check.  The affidavit for Verification of Legal Presence must be completed with a notary public.  A copy of the identification document taken to the notary, usually a GA driver’s license, needs to be included.  Here (.pdf) is a list of some campus notaries.  Campus notaries do not charge a fee.

Cohort Model
The M.A.T. programs in the College of Education are offered in a cohort model. A cohort is an organizational structure used to provide instruction, support, and guidance for teacher candidates and advanced candidates.  Teacher candidates in a particular program (e.g., special education) enter together as a group. They take courses and complete field activities over a specified period of time. Each cohort group of about 18-20 candidates is guided during the period of study by a Mentor Leader-a professor skilled in advising, supervising, and implementing best teaching practices.

The M.A.T.. requires an overall 3.0 gpa for graduation. Courses in which the student has earned less than a C cannot be counted for degree credit. Cohort programs require satisfactory completion of each semester in order to move on to the next semester.

Graduate Assistantships
A limited number of graduate assistantships are available for qualified graduate students.  For more information, please see the graduate assistantship page.

The departmental Coordinators of Graduate Programs (Departmental Chairpersons), in cooperation with the program coordinators, assign each regularly admitted student to an advisor in the chosen area of study.  A signed program of study must be filed with the departmental Coordinators of Graduate Programs in order to register for classes.  It is the responsibility of the student to meet with the assigned advisor to develop an individualized program of study that meets the program requirements. A signed Program of Graduate Study must be filed with the departmental Coordinator of Graduate Programs in order to be fully admitted.

Exit Requirements
In the College of Education M.A.T. programs, students must:

  1. Pass a comprehensive departmental exit requirement
  2. Earn a minimum GPA of 3.0 on all work attempted
  3. Submit an application for graduation at least one semester before the anticipated graduation date
  4. Complete the graduate program within six years of the date of the initial course work listed on the Program of Graduate Study

Transfer of Courses
M.A.T. Secondary:  Nine semester hours may be transferred from other institutions, if prior approval is given by the advisor and if the course work is no more than six years old at the time of completion of the graduate degree. 

(M.A.T. Special Education: No transfer hours are accepted.)

The M.A.T. graduate programs lead to an initial certification at the graduate level; applicants must be recommended by Georgia College to the Professional Standards Commission for certification.
