Physical Plant
MissionThe Mission of the Plant Operations & Facilities Planning Department is to design, construct, and efficiently operate accessible, well-maintained facilities and infrastructure that support existing and future activities and facilitate growth of the University by providing a safe, healthy, comfortable, clean, and attractive environment for learning, living, and working.
The Department
The Plant Operations & Facilities Planning Department is a service oriented organization that provides a wide range of services for the campus community, including facility design and construction, grounds care, electrical and mechanical maintenance, building maintenance and repair, utility generation and distribution, preventive maintenance, custodial services, and vehicle maintenance.
The Office
The office of Plant Operations & Facilities Planning, located in Miller Court, performs the administrative duties of budget, work order control, scheduling, clerical, personnel functions, and other duties required for the employees of the department. The office also processes university fuel credit card billings, work order processing, and radio dispatch emergency repair.
AutomotiveThe Automotive Shop maintains all university owned vehicles and equipment. These include all vehicles operated by Plant Operations & Facilities Planning, Public Safety, Media Services, Administrative Services, the President’s Office, Grounds, and Campus Shuttle. These services are provided through a Work Order Request form.
Custodial ServicesCustodial Services provides cleaning services for all academic and administrative buildings, athletic facilities, and residence halls. During three work shifts, they clean over 1,948,204 square feet in 52 buildings every day. They also perform minor maintenance items such as replacement of light bulbs and tubes. They often assist the Moving Crew during setup and take down for major special events. These services are provided through routine maintenance work orders and radio dispatch emergency service calls.
Facilities Planning
The office of Facilities Planning is staffed with estimators and drafters under the supervision of the Facilities Planner. This office performs engineering services for space planning, new construction, renovation work, parking, and landscaping along with ADA accessibility compliance and interior and exterior building signage. Master records of buildings and utilities are maintained in this office. The office coordinates and inspects new construction and renovation projects. Plans for major projects provided by outside architects and engineers are reviewed by this office. They also prepare estimates, plans, and specifications for construction projects and building alterations. Their services are requested through appointment or the Project Request and Approval form (blue form).
GroundsThe Grounds Crew maintains approximately 147 of the University’s 700 acres. Their function is to maintain and beautify the grounds in order to enhance the overall visual impact of the campus. This type of maintenance includes mowing, edging, pruning, and the removal of trash and debris. The Grounds Crew is responsible for monitoring proper storm drainage and erosion control. As time and budget allow, the Grounds Crew also designs and installs upgraded landscape plans that reduce maintenance, while adding aesthetically pleasing green spaces.
Planning, Construction, & Business ServicesThe Planning, Construction, & Business Services Department provides services including minor renovation and construction project services, as well as a number of support services, such as project planning and estimating, and computer aided design.
Other ServicesThe Plant Operations Department also provides of public service through free consultation on maintenance, design, grounds, and construction topics to local schools, municipalities, and other non-profit organizations. These services are provided as time allows.
