PEMBROKE, N.C. – Sophomore pitcher Michaela Wolf did it all for Francis Marion University (34-13) today (May 7) leading the Patriots to a 2-0 win over No. 25 Georgia College & State University (39-13) to open the NCAA Division II Softball South Atlantic Region Tournament.
In a game of missed opportunities that saw both teams strand runners in scoring position multiple times throughout the first four innings, Francis Marion finally broke through in the fifth on a two-out, two-run double from Wolf. The hit dropped just in front of the left field fence, plating Monica Wofford and Shannan Tyson. Wofford reached on a walk, Tyson a single.
“We had trouble hitting today with runners in scoring position,” said GCSU head coach Ginger Chaffinch. “I felt Mandy (Chandler) pitched well, we played defense well, but we just can’t leave nine runners on and be successful.”
The Lady Bobcats stranded nine runners, the same number as FMU.
Wolf (24-10) picked up the win as well, tossing all seven while fanning four and scattering six hits. Mandy Chandler (Covington, Ga.) (24-8) suffered the loss, fanning seven and allowing two runs on nine hits.
Wolf finished 3-for-4 with two RBI, Tyson ended the day 2-for-4. For Georgia College, both Tonya Medders (Bascom, Fla.) and Shelbie Lindsey (Waddell, Ariz.) had a pair of hits.
The Patriots will advance to play the winner of the Carson-Newman College/Pfeiffer University contest in the second round tomorrow (May 8) at 4 p.m. The Lady Bobcats will face the loser of that same game tomorrow at 11 a.m.
