Georgia's Public Liberal Arts UniversityMILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Senior reliever Michael Newman (Evans, Ga.) of the Georgia College & State University baseball team (32-22) was named GCSU Athlete of the Week, the sports information office announced today (April 30). The award honors the top performance by a Bobcat during the week ending April 27. This is the first such honor for both Newman and the Bobcat baseball team this season.
The Bobcat closer played a bit different role in one of the most important games of GCSU’s season. He entered in the fourth in a tight 5-4 game with runners on first and second and one down at Augusta State University. After getting the Bobcats out of that jam with the lead still intact, Newman buzzed through the final five innings with just one hit and no walks to preserve the win and get GCSU into the PBC Playoffs. Newman also struck out four in his longest outing of the 2008 season. The win was Newman’s 30th in his career, putting him one out of second place in the Georgia College recordbooks.
Newman and the rest of the Bobcats have the week off, awaiting their seeding for the PBC Tournament May 8-12 in Aiken, S.C.
