PEMBROKE, N.C. – Georgia College & State University softball (40-13) used a one-hitter from junior pitcher Mandy Chandler (Covington, Ga.) to eliminate Pfeiffer University (30-23) from the NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional today (May 8) 5-0 at LRA Field.
Georgia College wasted little time getting the scoring started, putting up two in the bottom of the first inning. Shortstop Kayla Smith (Lexington, S.C.) singled home second baseman Lindsey Swanson (Kennesaw, Ga.), who had earlier singled, taking second on a wild pitch. Then the Lady Bobcats picked up an unearned run when Kori Pickowitz (Keller, Texas) drove home Shelbie Lindsey (Waddell, Ariz.) with a single. Lindsey had reached on a fielding error.
GCSU added two more in the fourth. After Kori Pickowitz led off the inning with a single to center, she eventually scored on a groundout off the bat of her sister, Kati Pickowitz (Keller, Texas). Pinch runner Ashley Payne (Elberton, Ga.) was plated by another Falcon error.
To cap the scoring, Smith had a one-out double in the fifth, and came in on the very next pitch when Kori Pickowitz snapped a single up the middle.
Chandler’s (25-8) perfect-game bid was snapped in the top of the sixth, when second baseman Stephanie Brandt beat out an infield hit. The Bobcat righty finished with 13 whiffs to just one walk, surrendering just the one hit. Her counterpart, Dacia Ijames (18-14) made it 5 2/3 innings, giving up five runs—two earned—and striking out four.
Kori Pickowitz was 3-for-3 with a run and two driven in, Swanson finished 3-for-4 and Smith had a 2-for-3 day with one run and another RBI.
The Lady Bobcats will advance to play the loser of today’s North Georgia College & State University/Armstrong Atlantic State University contest. The Lady Falcons’ season comes to a close at 30-22, winners of the 2008 Conference Carolinas Championship.
