BELMONT, N.C. – Led by individual medalist honors for sophomore Niclas Johansson (Skanor, Sweden) the No. 9 Georgia College & State University golf squad blitzed the eight teams at the NCAA Division II Southeast Region Championship, besting the field by 13 strokes.

The Bobcats finished four over par (285-295-292=872) on the par-72, 7037-yard course at Point Lake and Golf Club.

Johansson led the way with a 71-71-69=211 at four-under par. Freshman Billy Shida (Berkeley Lake, Ga.) saved his best round for last, carding a career-low 69 (73-74=216) taking a career-best fourth place overall.

Also in the top-10 was first-round leader Juan Bialet (Buenos Aires, Argentina) carding a 69-74-76=219 in a tie for sixth. Sophomore Francisco Bide (Buenos Aires, Argentina/El Diamante (Calif.)) took 20th (72-76-78=226) and rookie Joe Young (Cochran, Ga.) landed 40th (76-85-82=243).

“We’ve had been waiting for it to all come together, and to do it at this tournament is great,” said head coach Jimmy Wilson. “Now we get the chance to see what we can do in Houston. Shida came up big today, and played like I’ve been expecting him to.”

The region title is the first in school history, as GCSU topped USC Aiken by 13 strokes. Finishing six behind the Pacers was Newberry College, with fourth-place finisher Clayton State University joining the bunch qualifying for the NCAA National Championship.

Johansson won the individual title over Carson-Newman College’s Brad Robinson by just two strokes (71-72-70=213).

The Georgia College linksters advance to the National Championship round for the second-straight season and the seventh time in school history.

The Bobcats will head to Houston for the Division II Championship May 14-17.
