FLORENCE, S.C. – The third time was unfortunately not the charm, as the No. 14 Georgia College & State University women’s tennis team (15-9) lost to No. 10 Columbus State University (20-7) 5-1 today (May 8) at the NCAA Division II Women’s Tennis Regional Tournament. The loss is the third to CSU for the Bobcats in 2008.
After Columbus State earned wins at the first two doubles spots, the Cougars’ Erin Reynolds and Daniela Castillo rallied from down 6-3 to win 8-6 at the No. 3 doubles position.
GCSU pulled to within 3-1 with a straight sets win (6-4, 6-3) by Bertille Lion (Saint Cyr, France) at No. 6 singles. However, CSU’s Roxana Dondera, ranked No. 38 nationally, won 7-5, 6-2 at No. 2 singles over Marjorie Ceppo (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Gabriela Vasilescu won 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 at the No. 3 spot over Diane Danna (Saint Germain-En-Laye, France).
Three of the six opening sets in singles play went to a tiebreaker, while two others finished with 7-5 decisions.
The loss ends the 2008 season for the Bobcat women’s tennis team, the second-straight season for them with 15 or more wins. It also ends the careers of three seniors: Celine Martin (Amberieux-En-Dombes, France), Whitney Lightfoot (Tifton, Ga.) and Sofia Intriago (Guayaquil, Ecuador).
Martin earned All-Peach Belt Conference (PBC) honors four times at GCSU, compiling a career 153-69 record. Lightfoot, a transfer from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, went 16-14 in two seasons. Intriago was a four-year starter for the Bobcats, tallying a 155-90 mark.
