Distinctive Resources of the University

The Flannery O'Connor Collection

In 1946, shortly after the publication of Flannery O'Connor's first short story "The Geranium" was published, the Ina Dillard Russell Library established the Flannery O'Connor Collection. They knew O'Connor's work would be long-lasting. The first manuscripts were given to the library by Regina Cline O'Connor in 1970. With the receipt of these manuscripts, the Collection became a place for scholarly research. Since that time, additional manuscripts have been added. Alongside scheduled research  opportunities, there is a museum that features various O'Connor material. Andalusia, O'Connor's family farm where she wrote many of her works, is just up the road from Georgia College. It too is open to the casual visitor or serious scholar.

Old Governor's Mansion
The Old Governor’s Mansion, considered one of the finest examples of High Greek Revival architecture in the nation, has been an integral part of Georgia College & State University since 1889. The Mansion was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1973. Beginning in the late 1990s, an initiative was begun to return the Old Governor’s Mansion to its antebellum splendor. Following five years of intensive historical, structural, and material research, the Old Governor’s Mansion began its long awaited historic restoration in November 2001. It reopened in February of 2005. The mansion is open for tours focusing on the history of the building and its occupants.

The Paul D. Coverdell Papers

In the fall of 1996, Paul. D. Coverdell donated his Peace Corps papers to the Ina Dillard Russell Library. In June of 1999 impressed with the GCSU mission, he returned in order to officially donate his United States Senate papers to the library. The Coverdell Institute Web site, founded on Sen. Paul Coverdell's highly esteemed public service, addresses the Coverdell values of liberty, learning, and leadership through public events, policy research, and serving as a resource to academic programs and student affairs.

Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum opened in 2004 after more than 20 years of collecting fossils in local, national, and international soils. It boasts one of the largest fossil vertebrate collection in the Southeast. For example, the museum has a number of Ice Age fossils including a complete bison skull unearthed in Brunswick, Ga. There are also marine fossils from an inactive kaolin mine in Wilkinson County. Other fossils in the collection come from various digs in North and South America.

GCSU Museum

In conjunction with Georgia College & State University's liberal arts mission, the GCSU Museum galleries offer faculty, students, staff and the Middle Georgia community opportunities for exploration of interdisciplinary topics. It is also home to the Flannery O'Connor Room, a permanent exhibit honoring the life and career of GCSU's most famous alumna.  The Museum has a fully equipped Education Room available for special occasions, lectures and programs and functions as the official Welcome Center for visitors and prospective students and their families.
