Grants are gift aid from federal, state, or university sources. They are awarded to students on the basis of need, and they do not need to be repaid. You must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be considered for grant awards. Below is a listing of grants offered at the University of Connecticut.

Federal Grants

Federal Pell Grants

Federal Pell Grant are offered to eligible students who are pursuing their first undergraduate degree. These funds do not require repayment. For the 2012-2013 academic year Federal Pell Grant awards may range from $602 to $5,550 depending on a student's eligibility and enrollment.

The Department of Education has announced a revision to the Lifetime Eligibility Pell Grant regulation, effective for the 2012-2013 academic year. The Lifetime Eligibility regulation will allow a student to receive a cumulative Pell grant up to the equivalent of 12 terms of FULL-TIME enrollment or 600%. If a student does not attend a term full time, their participation percentage will be pro-rated. For example, a student enrolled half-time for the Fall semester will have used 25% of total eligibility.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (SEOG)

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (SEOG) are offered to eligible full-time undergraduates with exceptional financial need (typically Federal Pell Grant recipients) whose FAFSA has been received by the federal processor on or before the on-time deadline. They do not require repayment and are offered on a first come, first served basis to students pursuing their first undergraduate degree. For the 2012-2013 academic year the amount of SEOG may range from $200 to $1,500 depending on a student's eligibility and enrollment.

TEACH Grants

TEACH Grants at the University of Connecticut are offered to eligible graduate students currently enrolled in one of two programs – The Integrated bachelor’s/Master’s Teacher Education program (IB/M Program) or the Teacher Certification program for College Graduates (TCPCG). Students must maintain a cumulative GPA 3.25 for each term or score above the 75th percentile on the SAT, ACT or GRE. Students receiving the TEACH grant must agree to satisfy the Agreement to Serve (ATS) criteria which includes teaching full-time for at least four years within eight years of completing their program at a Title I school in a specified subject area (mathematics, science, a foreign language, bilingual education, special education, as a reading specialist, and other "high-need" fields). If service is not met, the grant must be repaid as an unsubsidized Direct Stafford Loan, with interest from the date(s) of first disbursement.
