FLITE Course Reserves Policy
The use of the reserve service is encouraged to ensure equitable access to materials in high demand. The reserve collection is kept at the Check Out Desk. Regularly assigned, recommended, or required readings are placed in the reserve collection at the request of Ferris faculty members to support the academic programs of the University. Library staff may also decide to place valuable and/or heavily used materials on reserve. Official Ferris documents for the current year (such as budget reports, policies, and Board of Trustees materials) are usually kept in the reserve collection. As new versions are added, out of date Ferris documents are transferred to the University Archives.
To have materials placed in the reserve collection, please observe the following:
- A reserve request form is available at the Check Out Desk or you can print a copy at this link. Please bring this form along with all materials to the Check Out Desk on the first floor of FLITE.
- To ensure that materials are available when classes begin, reserve requests should be submitted to the Check Out Desk at least one week prior to the beginning of the semester. During the rest of the semester, an advance notice of 48 hours (Monday to Friday) is required. Additional time is needed if new materials or recalled items are to be processed for reserve. We recommend that course assignments not be made until the materials have been processed and are available.
- Photocopies of copyrighted material must conform to the copyright laws. Copyright clearance is the responsibility of the faculty member who places the materials on reserve. Obtaining copyright permission can take several weeks. Proof of copyright permission will need to be submitted before items are placed on reserve. Any questions regarding copyright laws should be forwarded to David Scott at 231-591-3540. Copyright information and a sample permission letter are also available on the Library Copyright page.
- In consultation with the instructor, FLITE staff members determine the length of the loan period for materials placed on reserve. Our loan periods are two hours, four hours, one day, three days, one week, and two weeks.
- Space constraints limit the number of materials that can be left on reserve. Faculty members should pick up materials at the end of a semester if they are not being used in a class the following semester. The FLITE staff will identify any materials that are rarely used. The requestor will be asked to review his/her reserve list to consider removal of less frequently used materials from reserve status.
- Personal material will be accepted for reserves; however, the library is not responsible for lost or damaged materials. Upon request, FLITE staff members will place security tags on personal materials placed on loan in the reserve collection.
