Ferris State University Big Rapids MI College

Disabilities Services

Disabilities Services is located within the Educational and Career Counseling Center. Our office is located on the 3rd floor of the Starr building, STR 313. Counselors are available by appointment or on a walk-in basis. You can contact us by calling 1-800-4-FERRIS (1-800-433-7747) and ask for ext. 3057, or by calling (231) 591-3057.

Our office coordinates and provides accommodations for academic programs. Services may be individualized to address a specific functional limitation.

A student with a disability is responsible for requesting accommodations through Disabilities Services. Our office will not seek students out. A student with a disability is also responsible for providing acceptable documentation of his or her disability. Disclosure of a disability is always on a voluntary basis. However, a student will not receive accommodations unless he or she discloses this information to our office.

There is no charge for receiving accommodations from the Educational and Career Counseling Center & Disabilities Services.

Eligibility for Services

All students must meet the requirements for admission to Ferris State University. A student with a disability needs to meet qualifications set by Disabilities Services for accommodations or services. To receive services, each student with a disability must first provide appropriate documentation of his/her disability from a medical and licensed professional.

Documentation must be current and speak to the present condition and needs of the student. What constitutes current varies based upon the specific disability.

Simply having a diagnosis does not automatically qualify a student for services. The student must present documentation that shows a specific need created by the diagnosis.

Parents cannot identify special needs for their child.
