Ferris State University - Interprofessional Wellness Clinic: An Interprofessional Approach to Eye Care
Students and faculty from nursing, optometry, and pharmacy participate in a half-day a week interprofessional clinic to provide:  

√  disease-specific eye examinations

√  one-on-one disease education

√   diabetes

√  high blood pressure

√   high cholesterol

√   asthma

√  emphysema

√  one-on-one medication counseling

√glucose and cholesterol profile monitoring

Nationally Recognized: The Interprofessional Wellness Clinic has won two national awards. In 2004, the clinic received the first place interdisciplinary award in the Department of Health and Human Services Secretary’s Award for Innovation in Health Promotion.  In 2006, the students in the interprofessional wellness clinic received the American Public Health Association’s Vision Care Section Beta Sigma Kappa Student Award.

  • Affects 20 million in the U.S.
  • Affects a person’s ability to breath properly
  • Exercise, allergens, and viral infections may lead to an asthma attack
  • Treatment includes medication and avoiding precipitating factors.

Emphysema

  • May be caused by long-term smoking or exposure to toxic chemicals
  • To slow the progression, patients should avoid smoking and second-hand smoke and/or exposure to lung irritants

Fees

Fees are charged for optometric and blood testing services.  There is no additional cost for interprofessional services.  Payment is expected at time of service.  Most insurance plans are accepted.
