Turkey Sector: Background & Statistics

Turkey meat production in the United States over the first nine months of 2014 has totaled 4.2 billion pounds, down 3.3 percent from the same period in 2013.  Total production for the year is forecast at 5.7 billion pounds, also lower than the previous year.  Lower cold storage holdings of whole turkeys have placed upward pressure on prices.  The October price for whole frozen hen turkeys on the wholesale market was $1.16 per pound, the highest monthly price in 2014, and 9 percent higher than a year earlier.  The average wholesale price for frozen whole hen turkeys during fourth-quarter 2014 is projected to range from $1.12 to $1.16 per pound, up 9 cents per pound from the fourth-quarter average in 2013.  Turkey consumption in the United States is expected to be 15.6 pounds per person in 2014, down 0.4 pounds from 2013.
