Overview

Errata: On September 30, 2014, corrections were made to the Food Availability data series and the Loss-Adjusted Food Availability data series for honey and edible syrups. The availability data for honey and edible syrups in the April 2014 annual update of the Food Availability data series was pulled from an incorrect table in ERS’s Sugar and Sweeteners Yearbook Tables. In the Food Availability data series, the Sweets.xls file has been corrected for all years from 1966 to 2012, and in the Loss-Adjusted Food Availability data series, the Sugar.xls, Servings.xls, and Calories.xls files have been corrected for all years from 1970 to 2012.

The ERS Food Availability (Per Capita) Data System (FADS) includes three distinct but related data series on food and nutrient availability for consumption. The data serve as popular proxies for actual consumption at the national level. Food availability data are now updated through 2012, the most recent year available; these data are the foundation for the other two series. Loss-adjusted food availability data are also available through 2012 for most products but are preliminary estimates. Nutrient availability data are provided through 2006, as this data series has not yet been updated beyond 2006. Documentation is available for each of the three data series. Custom reports are currently unavailable.

The 2012 data include estimates for over 200 commodities, including individual fruits, vegetables, grains, added sugars & sweeteners, dairy products, nuts, meat, poultry, and seafood. However, for several added fats & oils, durum flour, candy & confectionary products, and rice, 2011 and 2012 data are not available at this time. This means that certain summary estimates—such as per capita daily amounts of calories and food pattern equivalents (or servings)—cannot be calculated for 2011 and 2012 for the added fats & oils group. The grains group no longer includes rice. Additionally, the summary estimates or totals across all food groups cannot be calculated for 2011 and 2012.

These data limitations also mean that certain summary estimates for food loss at the retail and consumer levels in the United States cannot be calculated. The data for added fats & oils (except butter), durum flour, and candy & other confectionery products are unavailable because the Census Bureau terminated select Current Industrial Reports (CIR). However, the absence of data on durum flour and candy & confectionary products is not critical to FADS since the data are available at a higher level of aggregation (from wheat flour in the case of durum flour) or are represented by individual sugars & sweeteners in FADS (by cane and beet sugar in the case of candy & confectionary products).

Per capita estimates for rice are unavailable due to a large and unexplained decline in the implied total domestic and residual use estimate. Residual use accounts for all unreported losses in the milling, transporting, and marketing of rice, and also offsets any statistical error in another supply and use account.

ERS is currently working to resolve these data issues and, where possible, is investigating the use other potential data sources.
