History

Danville Area Community College is an accredited public two-year community college providing higher education opportunities for youth and adults in East Central Illinois. Established initially as an extension center of the University of Illinois in 1946, DACC became a public junior college named Danville Community College under Danville Public Schools in 1949. In 1951, the name was changed to Danville Junior College. In June of 1966, the College separated from Danville School District No. 118 under provisions of the Public Junior College Act and became an independent two-year area college under the control of the Board of Trustees of Junior College District No. 507. The name Danville Junior College was changed to Danville Area Community College on July 1, 1979, to be more reflective of the services rendered. The College district encompasses high school districts in Vermilion, Edgar, Iroquois, Ford, and Champaign counties with an estimated population 112,000. Originally housed at Danville High School, the college was moved to its current location in 1965.

The Campus

DACC is located on an attractive 75-acre campus on the south-east side of Danville, acquired from the Veterans Administration in 1965. Several of the existing buildings, constructed around the turn of the century, were renovated; partial funding for this renovation was provided by generous public support of the Danville Junior College Foundation Drive in 1965.

Several new buildings have been constructed since then:

  • Mary Miller Center and gymnasium, named for the college's first president
  • Technology Center
  • Bremer Conference Center and theater
  • Ornamental horticulture building and greenhouse
  • Operations Facility (physical plant)
  • Child Development Center

Several major projects involving existing buildings have been completed over the last several years:

  • An addition to the Technology Center now houses the Information Systems division.
  • The School of Nursing moved from building 9 into a new facility in the lower level of the Mary Miller Center.
  • Lincoln Hall is complete and connects buildings 6, 7 and 8 (now known as Prairie, Vermilion and Cannon Halls, respectively). Lincoln Hall houses the Business Division, Student Services, Graphics, Campus Services, the Bookstore, and several other departments. Several photos of the construction progress of this building are available.
  • The fiber-optic campus network backbone was installed in 1999, replacing the old copper backbone. During the summer and fall of 2001, almost all Token-Ring network hardware on campus was replaced with Ethernet, using Cisco Catalyst switches.
  • A new industrial training center has been added to the north-east side of the Technology Center.
  • In the Clock Tower Center, the lower level and portions of the first floor have been renovated to house the library. Work began in late December, 1999 and was completed by October 2000.
  • Prairie, Vermilion and Cannon Halls have been completely renovated. Work on this project began in December 2000, and was completed during the summer of 2002.
