Raised in Tunisia and France, singer-composer Nawel crosses borders with her music. Her lyrics fuse French, English, and Tunisian Arabic attempting to create a new social and political space. After the revolt of January 2011, she was inspired to go back to Tunisia. She now collaborates with the collective ART Solution which takes art out of the theater and brings it into the street.

Alain Guiraudie
Winner of a major prize at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival and the recipient of a host of glowing reviews around the world, The Stranger by the Lake directed by Alain Guiraudie is the first of his ten films made since 1990 to be released commercially in the USA. Its setting is a lakeside gay cruising zone where a murder is committed. But the film’s interests go far beyond whodunit. The artist is after a more complex exploration of the links between death and desire.

Yasmine Hamdan
Co-founder of Soapkills, the first indie-electronic band to appear in the Middle East, Yasmine Hamdan now works as a solo artist, composer, and actor from a base in Paris. Inspired by the great Arab women singers of the mid 20th century, she sings in a mixture of dialects: Kuwati, Palestinian, Egyptian, Bedouin, and her native Lebanese. Yet her work also fits with the global traditions of electronic music that fill lounges and clubs wherever young people gather. She is an icon of the underground for her many admirers. CANAPE takes a look at the artist as she prepares to launch her newest recording.
