Junior Faculty Research Award Winners

The 2012 winners of the Junior Faculty Research Award in Science and Engineering are:

Stacey Brenner-Moyer , Asst. Professor of Chemistry from Brooklyn College
Simon Kelly , Asst. Professor of Biomedical Engineering from City College
Alexey Ovchinnikov , Asst. Profressor of Mathematics from Queens College
Brian Tiburzi , Asst. Professor of Physics from City College

Capturing The Power of Sunlight Like an urban leaf

drain journal Chemical energy is derived from sunlight via nanomachines in plants called chloroplasts that have evolved over millions of years. Human efforts to capture sunlight and produce electricity have taken place over a much shorter time frame and use a chemical process called photovoltaic power generation.  Recent work from Professor Mike Drain at Hunter College has come up with a novel semi-transparent organic photovoltaic device in the form of a film that could be used to coat windows in homes and offices.  Professor Drain and colleagues at Hunter, with collaborators at Brookhaven National Labs, determined solar cell performance of a variety of phthalocyanine dyes that can be blended to produce absorption over a broad part of the solar spectrum.  Their studies also examined the nanoarchitecture of these organic photovoltaic devices and revealed that disordered films make better solar cells.  The study is published in the February issue of the Journal of Materials Chemistry A.

The Collaborative Incentive Research Grant (CIRG) funds faculty research projects in their preliminary stages and encourages an interdisciplinary approach with a focus on participation from two or more CUNY campuses.
