Adult Learners at CUNY

Black Male Initiative

An important new initiative intended to increase, encourage, and support the inclusion and educational success of under-represented groups in higher education, in particular black males. Collegiate Learning Assessment

The Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA) provides an authentic means for measuring college student abilities in critical thinking, analytic reasoning, problem solving, and written communications - key skills that are emphasized across colleges and across academic programs. CUNY colleges administer the CLA to representative samples of freshmen as they enter in the fall, and then to senior students as they approach completion of their degrees in the spring. initiatives/cla.html

CUNY Service Corps

The CUNY Service Corps mobilizes CUNY students, faculty and staff to work on projects that improve the short and long-term civic, economic and environmental sustainability of New York City.

Latino Faculty Initiative

Established in Fall 2006, the Latino Faculty Initiative seeks to link qualified Latino(a) candidates to faculty positions within CUNY. To this end, the initiative will engage in outreach and recruitment, and work with CUNY colleges to advance their faculty’s diversity. initiatives/lfi.html

Math Matters at CUNY

Incorporating contributions from departments across the University, the Central Office, and external partners, CUNY promotes excellence and achievement in the teaching and learning of mathematics. initiatives/cuny-math-initiative.html


In Fall 2013, CUNY implemented the Pathways initiative across its undergraduate colleges. Pathways established a new system of general education requirements and new transfer guidelines across the University, and by doing so has reinforced CUNY's educational excellence while easing student transfer between CUNY colleges. initiatives/pathways.html

Workforce Development Initiative

Each year, CUNY receives funding from New York State for the Workforce Development Initiative (WDI). These funds, which the Office of Academic Affairs awards to CUNY colleges through a competitive process, allow the University to support New York City’s workforce through innovative workforce training and education programs and research projects. initiatives/wdi.html
