The Virginia and Hanover County Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War and Emancipation - Programs and Activities

Virginia Sesquicentennial Happenings

The General Assembly of Virginia created the Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Commission in 2006 (HB 1440) to prepare for and commemorate the sesquicentennial of Virginia's participation in the American Civil War. This organization has established a central Statewide Events Calendar web site for activities and events associated with the Sesquicentennial. A number of these events are scheduled in Hanover County. You can view the specific events web page at www.virginiacivilwar.org/maps_google_now.php. To search Hanover County only events: Select “Then and Now” from “Home” page; Scroll to bottom of page; Click “Search for Destination” or “Search for Special Events”; In “Locality” Select “Hanover” from “Drop Down Window”; In “Type” Select an individual event or “Select All” (Size makes “Select All” very slow); Click“ Search”. You are on your way by clicking the individual event.

Hanover County Sesquicentennial Committee

The Hanover County Sesquicentennial Committee (the “Hanover 150th”) was created at the request of Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Commission to supplement, assist, and market Hanover County’s participation in the Sesquicentennial, and organize and assist in the planning and implementation of selected, specific Hanover-based programs related to the Virginia Sesquicentennial Civil War and Emancipation period (2011-2015). It includes Historical Commission members, the Town of Ashland and core founders - the Hanover County Historical Society, Hanover Tavern and Historic Polegreen Church Foundation.

The Committee's core purposes include:

County organizations should plan and schedule Civil War and Emancipation related events such as programs, exhibits, tours, etc. as related to the historical time period of occurrence to correspond with dates over the next five year period. Example: schedule a program in May, 2012 related to the Battle of Hanover Courthouse, May 27, 1862. If the organization wishes to be included on the State website, please contact the Hanover 150th Committee.

Note: The creating organization is responsible for all related program organizational tasks; the Hanover 150th, upon receipt, will review and upon concurrence, recommend the scheduled program/event for inclusion on the State website. Upon State approval, a Logo Application and Memorandum of Understanding will be electronically sent to the organization by the Hanover 150th. The organization will complete the necessary documents and return to the State who will then provide the logo. The organization can then use the State Sesquicentennial logo for promotional purposes of the specific event. Each subsequent event must go through this process.

For more information or to forward program/event for review, contact: David Deal, Committee Chair Hanover Tavern Foundation at ddeal@hanovertavern.org or (804) 537-5050, Ext. 24.
