Intensive Community Treatment (ICT) is a multidisciplinary team approach to provide comprehensive, community based psychiatric treatment, rehabilitation, and support to adults with serious and persistent mental illness. A team of professionals whose background and training include psychiatry, social work, rehabilitation counseling, and nursing provides these services.

Counseling services are provided when it is determined that an individual who is requesting help for mental health and/or substance abuse problems is best served by meeting with a clinician/therapist on a regular basis, for a specified time frame, to focus on goals, objectives and strategies for solving problems together. These services are primarily provided in the clinic setting.
Residents of Hanover County who desires help to work on mental health and substance abuse problems, and is willing and able to actively participate in their own treatment, is eligible for counseling services at Hanover County Community Services Board. Eligibility restrictions exist for this service. Please contact us for further information regarding eligibility. Some clients will be eligible for ten therapy sessions only.
Counseling services are provided individually, in groups, and to families, depending on the nature of the client's presenting problem. Counseling is provided in a confidential setting with a focus on supporting and strengthening the consumer's ability to help him/her self to achieve his/her goals. These goals could include reducing stress and or depression, improving relationships and functioning at work and home, and recovery from drug and alcohol dependence and addictions. Counseling will be time limited for those who are able to easily reach their treatment goals. It may be longer for those who have a persistent mental illness or substance abuse problem. Services are provided in our Mechanicsville and Ashland offices, with limited evening appointments available.

Crisis services are a 24 hour, 7 day a week emergency program within the Hanover County Community Services Board (CSB). Crisis provides emergency mental health and/or substance abuse services. In addition, it is the entry point for outpatient MH/SA services at the CSB for Hanover County residents who meet the eligibility criteria for these services.
Hanover residents, and anyone who is physically located within Hanover County during a mental health or substance abuse emergency is eligible for crisis services.
Services include evaluation for psychiatric hospitalization, brief therapy for crisis stabilization, assessments and referrals to other service providers, and assessments and referrals to Hanover County CSB programs and providers. Evaluation and assessment can take place at the agency or when necessary, in the client's home.
Pregnant or parenting women who struggle with substance use disorders are prioritized for assessment and/or coordination of services, which may include:

Home-Based Services Program is an intensive, community-based program that serves children under the age of 18 old and their families. The service is structured to maintain children with serious emotional and behavioral problems in the community. It is provided in the context of the family and geared to help families reduce crises, increase functioning, and access resources.
The Home-Based Program serves Hanover County resident families with youth under the age of 18. At the time of referral the youth are at risk of removal from the home or are transitioning into the community from a previous out-of-home placement. Services are designed to assist families with multiple problems and multi-agency involvement. Home-Based referrals are considered for assessment based on the following five criteria:

Case management services provide support and assistance with the concrete needs of individuals with mental health and/or substance abuse problems. If eligible, a client is assigned a case manager to oversee and monitor their service plan. In many instances, the case manager will provide the client direct assistance with a range of service needs. Case management services may be provided in the office, in the client's home, or in the community.
Residents of Hanover County that request mental health and substance abuse services may be eligible for case management. To be eligible, the client must have a need for multiple services that require referral and coordination among a variety of providers, and the client is unable to manage this without assistance. The need for case management services is determined at the time of intake. Some clients receive both case management and counseling services.

Substance abuse services are those which provide assessment and treatment for adults who are experiencing problems resulting from their use of drugs and/or alcohol. The problems may be occurring at work, with family and friends, or may have involved the person with the court system.

The adult IOP provides an outpatient alternative to residential substance abuse treatment. Our goal is to provide an intensive treatment program without clients having to leave their jobs and families for 28 days. Participants receive intensive education and support throughout the 10 week IOP. They attend group 3 times per week and families once per week. The curriculum is designed to help participants increase their motivation to abstain from alcohol and other drugs and to establish a recovery program. All participants are required to attend 12 step recovery groups as well. Once the IOP is completed, they have the option of attending our “Taking Action Group” weekly for ongoing support or individual aftercare if clinically indicated.
Any Hanover resident, court ordered or voluntary, who has met with a clinician for an assessment for clinical appropriateness first. In addition, for optimum treatment the group has a maximum capacity of 12 at any one time, therefore to be eligible a slot must also be available.
The Adult IOP consists of a 10 week course of treatment with groups that meet 3 evenings per week for 3 hours each group. Follow up is available either in a weekly group meeting or individually for a total of 10 additional weeks if clinically indicated. Random drug screens are included in the program model.

Hanover’s Juvenile Drug Treatment Court program is revolutionary approach in addressing substance abuse/dependence in adolescents who engage in criminal behaviors through providing therapy and probation supervision through a partnership of community agencies and private business partners.
Adolescents with a substance abuse/dependence diagnosis, between the ages of 13 and 17 (at time of entry into the program), are residents of Hanover, have appropriate non-violent criminal charges and have a willing parent/guardian to participate in treatment with the adolescent are eligible for the program.
The Drug Court is an intensive, outpatient, substance abuse treatment program which offers intensive probation supervision, judicial supervision, group and family therapy, individual and home based therapy as appropriate, random and frequent drug and alcohol screening, parent support group, school monitoring and other services as needed by the consumer and family. Rewards and sanctions are used to provide external motivations for change, while treatment seeks to inspire internal motivations for change.

RFT is a 10 week comprehensive substance abuse group for teens and their families. The teens attend group twice weekly and family members attend once weekly. The curriculum includes education about substance use as well as the process for recovery. Group support helps encourage participants have a solid start on their recovery at the end of the 10 week program. Upon completion of the group continued attendance at 12 step recovery meetings is strongly encouraged.
Hanover teens, 14 and older, who are using or experimenting with substances are eligible for the service. In addition there must be at least some motivation for the teen to engage in treatment efforts. Parents and other family members must agree to participate in their teens’ treatment program.
An assessment for clinical appropriateness for services followed by the 10 week group twice weekly. Weekly drug screens are given to participants. Follow up includes a strong recommendation to continue in a 12 step recovery meeting somewhere in the community. Individual aftercare counseling is available if clinically indicated.

Psychiatric Services are medical services that are provided to individuals by CSB child or adult psychiatrists. Most often these are provided in clinic settings.
Some residents of Hanover County who have requested mental health, mental retardation and /or substance abuse services from the CSB may be eligible for medical services if referred by their CSB counselor/clinician or by the crisis staff, following a face to face assessment.

Psychosocial Rehabilitation is a clubhouse program that provides services to adults with serious mental illness. It assists those persons who need to establish a daily routine, who need to develop a broader social network, or who need to develop life or prevocational skills in order to live independently or to maintain employment. RAFT stands for Recovery, Acceptance, Friendship and Teamwork.
Individuals must be 18 years of age or older, have a primary diagnosis of mental illness, and be actively receiving treatment or case management for their mental illness from Hanover County Community Services Board.

A program in the public school setting for middle school students who may otherwise need private day services. Youth Day Treatment provides education as well as daily individual and group therapy.
Students referred by the lead teacher specialist for their corridor who would benefit from daily structure, support, and therapy with an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) that indicates that the placement is appropriate.
