Continuing Education Classes

Non-Credit Programs

Continuing Education offerings include traditional on-campus classes as well as online courses. Courses are added to the schedule throughout the year. As opportunities to serve the community through non-credit/continuing education arise, on-demand courses will be added to the schedule. It is our goal to serve the needs of the community through meaningful, personal, and professional enrichment courses and therefore, welcome your suggestions. Please feel free to contact this office. Class Locations/Room Changes

Classes are held on the Cleveland State campus unless otherwise indicated. Occasionally, campus room assignments must be changed to accommodate specific course needs. In cases where room changes have been made, an e-mail will be sent to registrants and a notice will be posted.

College Prep

ACT Prep Review

There are three separate sessions scheduled in preparation for the ACT test. This class is an overview of the ACT test, emphasizing the following areas: test strategies, math, science reasoning and reading preparation. This course is a prep for the test. Cleveland State does not administer the test.

Training for Life: Personal Protection

Training for Life is the ultimate personal protection course based on self escape techniques for men and women. The course is tailored to you with techniques and approaches that you can learn and apply regardless of your age, physical makeup or conditioning! Empower yourself and attain a greater level of self confidence with this one of a kind personal safety training course. Four separate sessions are scheduled for Spring 2013

Tai Chi Chuan

Tai Chi Chuan is a low impact exercise routine, which originated in ancient China. It is recognized for promoting relaxation, balance, flexibility, calmness and peace of mind. A work out that is easy on the joints and improves immune functioning. This class will include traditional Tai Chi Chuan standardized routines.

Language

Sign Language (Beginning)

Have you tried in the past to learn sign language from a book?  Do you want to learn the language used by both Deaf and Hearing people in a fun and creative environment? Continuing Education is offering a class full of fun, creative instructional methods that will enhance your ability to use your hands to communicate. This class introduces the fundamentals of Sign Language, including basic vocabulary and grammatical non-manual signals, introduces cultural knowledge and increases understanding of the many environments in which sign language can be implemented as an important teaching/learning tool.
Cost: $40 (Supplies included in cost)

Beginning Spanish

Emphases will be on grammar and conversational phrases.

Photography

Digital Photography

If you’ve ever felt less than confident with your camera, or if it’s permanently on auto, you need this class! In six sessions you will learn how to get a good exposure every time, what all those little symbols on your camera do and when to use them (and which ones you can ignore), how to handle common everyday challenges like shooting in a gym or under picnic pavilions. You will learn what you need to know about your own camera, get a chance to shoot a variety of photos in class and have your work evaluated by the instructors. Bring your camera and start taking better photos now.

Financial Strategies for Successful Retirement

This 12 hour course will help you learn how to: Assess your retirement income needs •  Understand a variety of investment choices • Potentially increase your investment returns • Make wise use of your employer-provided benefits • Protect yourself and your family from economic catastrophes •Transfer your possessions to the next generation • Develop a plan to meet your retirement goals.
Cost: $79 (Guest or spouse may be registered at no extra charge) Fee includes color illustrated workbook.

Parenting/Divorce Workshop

Classes for divorcing parents of minor children are offered on the Cleveland State campus. These classes fulfill the requirements of the Tennessee Education Seminar Law for divorcing parents.
