Clemson University, a land-grant university of South Carolina, is located in a diverse area near forests, lakes and mountains, with the Atlantic Ocean only a few hours away. In addition to the 1,400-acre campus, real estate holdings include over 32,000 acres of forestry and agricultural lands throughout the state, most of which support comprehensive research programs.  Plant and Environmental Sciences graduate students use several General Users Facilities located on campus. Other facilities include the South Carolina Agriculture and Forestry Research System, four Research and Education Centers across the state.

PES students use several General Users Facilities located on campus:

• The Greenhouse Complex provides varied levels of controlled environment for conducting experiments. The Headhouse, a 16,000 gross square foot facility, accommodates two laboratories (one a Biosafety Level 3 lab), seven walk-in growth rooms, four growth chambers, four controlled environment rooms and a 1,000 square foot demonstration area. Greenhouses have 40,000 gross square feet under glass and 32 research sections each with individual environmental control. Two greenhouse sections have been designated for teaching.
• Biosystems Research Complex is a programmatically focused research facility for Clemson University. The facility was planned by faculty of Horticulture, Crop Science, Plant Pathology and Physiology and envisioned as a multi-disciplinary research facility focused on agriculture, environment and human health. The $27 million construction was funded by State appropriations to Public Service Activities and completed in January 2002.
• The CU Genomics Institute is a research and training facility focusing on structural and functional genomics of agricultural and horticultural crops and their pests.
• Scanning Electron Microscopy Facility, located in Jordan Hall, provides access to transmission and scanning electron microscopes. A confocal microscope is also located in Jordan Hall.
• The Multi-user Analytical Laboratory, located in Long Hall, provides access to quantification of pesticide residues, secondary metabolites and hormones as they relate to plant physiology research.
• Musser Farm is a 240-acre fruit tree research farm located along the shore of Lake Hartwell. The main building, totaling nearly 6,000 sq. ft., includes 2,500 sq. ft. of "wet chemistry" laboratory space, offices, a greenhouse, lathe house, walk-in cold rooms, post harvest storage rooms, and two growth chambers. Major research emphasizes Rosaceae species, germplasm development and fruit production.
• Simpson Research Center, located 8 miles from Clemson, offers opportunities for field experiments dealing with plant genetics, breeding and crop ecology.
• The Coastal Research and Education Center (REC) located in Charleston is a regional leader and nationally recognized center of excellence for vegetable research. The Costal REC coordinates its programs with those of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Vegetable Laboratory. Coastal REC provides instruction and practical experience to the PES graduate students in vegetable genetics and breeding, physiology, pathology, entomology and horticultural production.
• Research and Education Centers in Florence and Blackville offer instruction and practical experience in crop, turf, and fruit and vegetable physiology, pathology, entomology, and production, while enhancing environmental quality.
• Archbold Tropical Research and Education Center, Dominica: The many undisturbed natural systems and small-scale agricultural systems make Dominica ideally suited for studying tropical terrestrial and agricultural ecosystems and their interaction ( http://www.clemson.edu/coastalrec/atrec_index.htm).
• Plant Germplasm Laboratory for breeding/genetics and weed ecology research is located in close proximity to CU campus.
• The South Carolina Botanical Garden (teaching and research facility) provides experience and resources for landscape design and implementation, ornamental germplasm evaluation, organic production and heirloom plant conservation.
• The Piedmont Region of South Carolina and the southern Appalachian Mountains represent one of the most biologically diverse areas in North America for ecology and conservation biology studies and restoration of natural ecosystems.
• Clemson University Library with more than1.6 million volumes, documents and reports, provide access to scholarly article databases, journals, and advanced books in the plant and environmental sciences, and to other databases associated with biological sciences.  Library associates provide specialized research instruction and consultation programs for graduate students.
