Organizations

A number of student organizations, many of them affiliated with national professional organizations, are active on campus and offer students a chance to get involved, to meet other communication students, and to be of service to the college, campus and profession.

Academic Honor Council

The Academic Honor Council is an appellate and judicial body comprised of student justices who maintain high ethical and academic standards. A minimum 3.25 GPA is required for a seat on the Honor Council. Justices meet with the Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Studies and her staff to provide counsel regarding academic integrity issues. Faculty adviser Dr. Jason Black.

Alabama Forensics Council

Student members of this council participate in the University's forensics program and attend both regional and national intercollegiate forensics competitions in debate and individual events. Thirty scholarships are awarded each year to students active in the program. Faculty advisor is the director of forensics.

Alabama Student Society for Communication Arts (ASSCA)

The purpose of this group are to serve as official ambassadors of the College of Communication and Information Sciences, to promote interest in the field of communication arts, and to provide opportunities for members to meet with professional people in the field. Membership is open to all students majoring or minoring in communication. Faculty adviser Dr. Jason Black.

American Copy Editors Society

ACES involves students interested in careers in copy editing for a variety of media, including newspapers, magazines, broadcasting, newsletters, books and more. The chapter is affiliated with the national ACES and was the first ACES student chapter in the country. Faculty adviser Wilson Lowrey.

Capstone Association of Black Journalists and Mass Communicators (CABJMC)

Capstone Association of Black Journalists is a local chapter affiliated with a national organization that serves as an interest group and pipeline for information on careers, jobs, internships, scholarships and other opportunities for all majors in the College with special emphasis on the needs of minority students. Faculty adviser Dr. Caryl Cooper.

The Capstone Federation

The Advertising Federation has a close relationship with area ad clubs and is affiliated with the American Advertising Federation. Members must have had at least one advertising course, be in good academic standing and be interested in advertising as a career. Faculty advisor is Susy Daria.

Delta Sigma Rho/Tau Kappa Alpha

Delta Sigma Rho/Tau Kappa Alpha is a national honorary for individuals who have excelled in forensics and who have established distinguished academic records. Students are selected on the basis of their academic record and accomplishment in debate or individual speaking events.

Health Communication Forum

History Forum

seeks to promote interdisciplinary views and perspectives concerning the study and teaching of communication history. The Forum aims to cultivate the na tional profile of our research programs in history and to increase awareness among students nationwide of the opportunities for studying communication history at UA.

Kappa Tau Alpha

Kappa Tau Alpha is the national journalism and mass communication honor society. Invitations are issued to juniors, seniors and graduate students in advertising, public relations, journalism and telecommunication and film who rank in the top ten percent of their class. Faculty advisor is Dr. Karla Gower.

Lambda Pi Eta

Lambda Pi Eta is the national communication studies honor society. Invitations are issued to juniors and seniors in communication studies who rank in the top ten percent of their class. Faculty adviser Jason Black.

Public Relations Student Society of America/Public Relations Council of Alabama

This organization gives public relations students an inside look into public relations as a career and as a field of study. The organization has both state and national counterparts. Faculty Adviser Tracy Sims.

Radio and Television Digital News Association

Radio and Television News Directors Association is a nationally affiliated organization designed to increase students' awareness of and interest in the field of broadcast news.

Society of News Design

Society of News Design involves students interested in careers in the visual aspects of journalism and mass communication, including photography, graphics, design and advertising. The chapter is affiliated with the national SND. Faculty adviser Kim Bissell.

Society of Professional Journalists

Society of Professional Journalists is open to students interested in learning about all areas of professional journalism regardless of the medium. While most members are journalism or broadcast journalism majors, SPJ is open to all majors, including A&S majors. This national organization works to promote journalism ethics, professionalism, FOI and diversity. Faculty adviser Dr. George Daniels.

Student Executive Council (Student Leadership Program)

Student Executive Council is comprised of the presidents of each of the College's student organizations, the College's SGA Senators and selected at-large members from each academic unit. The council meets regularly with staff of the C&IS Dean's Office to discuss issues throughout the College. The council promotes communication among students, faculty and the administration of the College. The council also plans and organizes student-faculty activities. Faculty adviser Dr. Jason Black.

WVUA-FM Radio

WVUA 90.7 the Capstone is the radio station for The University of Alabama community. The Capstone plays a wide variety of rock and roll music with times set aside for more specialized music, such as jazz or blues. Disc jockeys and managers are students. The station also provides news, sports, weather, and talk shows. The adviser is Terry Siggers.
