The Contractor for the General Fund (Tunnel) Project will be working in the following areas during the week of April 2nd:
- Carroll Hall: welding in the tunnel, venting will occur near the manhole outside the Marcus White Student Technology Center (Computer Lab) at the south side of the building.
- Seth North tunnel (from Seth North to Beecher Hall): welding in the tunnel, venting will occur near the basketball court outside the Beecher Hall Fitness Center
This work should have minimal impact on campus operations. Please contact the Facilities Management Department at x22301 with any questions.
March 21 ADVISORY:
The Contractor for the New Academic Project will be conducting a water full flow test on Wednesday, March 21 at 7:30 a.m. This test is required to complete the final design of the fire protection system for the building. As part of this test, fire hydrants along the main campus sidewalk will be opened, including the one at the construction site entrance ( the one north and east of the old Power House), and possibly the one outside the southwest corner of Burritt Library. The test should be completed in approximately one hour. During the test, there may be a slight drop in water pressure in surrounding buildings. After the test, you may experience discoloration of the water. This is all normal and non-hazardous to you. If you have any questions, please contact Jim Grupp, CCSU Project Manager at 860-832-2327. Thank you for your patience during this project.

Construction of the new academic building reached a major milestone on March 9 with the placement of the first steel column.
Over the next few weeks the contractor will be working on steel erection from the Stanley Street end of the building toward Maria Sanford Hall. The steel superstructure (columns and beams) are erected first, then the steel floor decking. As the steel decking is completed, the concrete floor topping deck is poured. All of this work should take approximately two months.
The new academic building will be four stories high. The first floor will contain classrooms, conference rooms and seminar rooms. The second floor will house the History Department, the third floor will be used by Political Science and Sociology, and the top floor will be the new location of the Geography and Anthropology Departments.
The project remains on time and on budget.

Mother Nature has been very cooperative with the construction of the New Academic Building. This winter’s weather has allowed the construction team to stay on task with the concrete pours, wall construction and site work.
During the past month, work has continued on foundations including the deep excavation in the northeast corner for the partial basement. Steel pilings were driven 25-35 feet into the ground to create a safe work environment for the concrete workers. Over 300 concrete trucks have delivered concrete to the site over the past two months. Two of seven interior footings along with the footings for the northeast corner of the building have been poured. The next step is to set concrete forms for the northeast walls and turn the corner on the east side (facing Maria Sanford) to complete the building footings.
All of this work gets the building ready for the next major milestone; the first delivery of steel in early March. The project team is looking forward to the placement of the first steel beam at the west end of the building.
The project remains on time and on budget.

The focus on the construction of the New Academic Building for the past month or so has been foundations, walls, and relocation of the primary electrical line, while the project design team reviews submittals. Submittals are documents that encompass every aspect of the building, from type of concrete to plumbing and electrical fixtures to wall and floor finishes. Every submittal gets reviewed by the project team to ensure the contractor supplies the correct material and fixtures. On a project this size, there are hundreds of submittals that need review.
The next major milestone will be first delivery of the structural steel for the building, which will occur during the first week in March. The project remains on time and on budget.

The bulk of the work outside of the main construction site has been completed. The contractor began dismantling the temporary construction fence south of Maria Sanford and will remove the fence around the Vance Green Tuesday and Wednesday. The project team thanks everybody for their patience during this phase of the project. All of the sidewalks south of Memorial Hall and Maria Sanford have been restored.
Inside the main construction area, a major milestone has been met as the forms for the concrete footings are being set. The first concrete pour for the building is scheduled for Thursday.

The New Academic Building contractor is beginning the work to tie into the water main. This work is located between the Welte Garage and the main construction site. Work in this area will take approximately two weeks and requires part of the driveway to be blocked.
The work in the Vance green area is essentially complete and new sod has been laid down. It will take a couple of weeks or so for the sod to become fully established so the fence will remain up until the landscaping contractor okays use of the green. In addition, the contractor is installing the underground storm water pipe up toward the main construction site.
CCSU appreciates your patience during this project. The work outside the main construction site should be finished in two to three weeks.

Week of October 24, 2011
On Monday, October 24, excavation for the New Academic Building’s sewer and water tie-ins will begin. This work will take place between Welte Garage’s southeast exits and the existing construction fencing. Temporary fencing will be installed in this area to protect faculty and staff. Pedestrians will be redirected around the work site.
The underground work between Vance and Memorial hall’s, which involved the sidewalk, is complete. On Monday, the contractor will begin restoring the sidewalks, and for the next several weeks the water detention system under the Vance Green will continue.
Thank you for your patience during this important project.
