Aerial Activities on University Premises on the Urbana-Champaign Campus

Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to state the campus’ commitment to safety in regard to aerial activities over or on campus property.

Scope

This policy applies to all members of the campus community and requesting non-affiliated entities.

Authority

The campus Executive Director of Public Safety or designee is assigned responsibility for implementing and maintaining this policy.

Policy

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is committed to a safe and nonviolent environment for all students, faculty, staff and visitors. For reasons of public safety, aerial activities are not usually permitted on campus property. There are no areas of campus property that are inherently safe for accommodating take-off or landing operations with the exception of Willard Airport. Any aerial activities over or on campus property must be compliant with applicable Federal Aviation Administration regulations.

Definitions

  • Aerial Activities

    The use of fixed wing aircraft, helicopters, hot air balloons, hang gliders, parachutes, unmanned equipment, or other special airborne equipment over or on campus property.

Processes/Procedures/Guidelines

Any aerial activities other than normal transportation (e.g. flights departing from or arriving to Willard Airport) must be approved in advance by the Executive Director of Public Safety or designee. The Executive Director of Public Safety or designee will coordinate any aerial activities with appropriate personnel from Willard Airport who will operate within applicable Federal Aviation Administration regulations.
