Office of Organizational Research

Director: Greg Northcraft

MISSION STATEMENT
The Office of Organizational Research (OOR) was established in 1992 in the College of Business. The center was
made possible by a generous gift from Harry Gray. Mr. Gray is a successful business executive who is interested in
fostering a greater understanding of effective organizational processes, including leadership.

The purposes of OOR are:

  1. Foster research on effective organizational practices, including leadership.

  2. Support doctoral and postdoctoral training in the organizational sciences.

  3. Facilitate interchange between organizational scholars throughout the UIUC campus.

  4. Serve as a communications hub for increased interaction with allied faculty and students at other major universities.

The center is administered by a director who also holds the title of "Harry Gray Chair of Executive Leadership." Funding policies are approved by the Organizational Behavior faculty of the college.

The center contributes to the college's three-fold mission of fostering excellence in research, outreach, and teaching in the following manner.

OOR's activities include a speaker series, faculty and graduate student research support, and annual conferences and workshops.

Research:

OOR provides modest direct support for faculty and graduate student research. It also has limited funds for supporting graduate student travel to conferences and workshops. This exposure is a major source of new ideas for student-initiated research projects.

The center funds the OOR Distinguished Speaker Series. This series has brought many senior scholars in our field to campus. It has also served as a forum for sharing current research among organizational scientists on the UIUC campus.

The center provides Harry Gray fellowships each year for Organizational Behavior doctoral students who have distinguished themselves as promising scholars. Faculty also receive some funds annually for direct research support. Given the limited funds available from the college to support doctoral students, this funding is critical to the success of our program.
