EDUCATION FOR DEMOCRATIC CITIZENSHIP

Education for Democratic Citizenship Handbook

Objectives and outcomes

The project aimed to raise young people’s awareness of citizenship issues at the local, national and global levels, to develop their intercultural competence with a focus on language and communication for democratic citizenship, and increase their confidence in taking appropriate action for the protection of democratic principles and practices within their communities.

The project supported young people’s personal and professional development with a view to become active and responsible members of the community and the wider society through working with instructional materials on citizenship education.

The team

The authors were a group of 8 Romanian teachers with experience in materials design and teacher training in human rights, citizenship and language education. They worked under the guidance of a UK consultant.

Results of the project

The two sets of materials for use in educational classes (ore de consiliere si orientare) at upper secondary level have been published in December 2007.

IMPREUNA, a book for Education for Democratic Citizenship which consisted of student pages and notes for the teacher.
A CD-ROM that included two sets of materials for education for democratic citizenship: TOGETHER- the English version and IMPREUNA -the Romanian  version.

The course was based on a framework for the development of citizenship competences conform with the Romanian curriculum for educational classes and with aspects of the National Curriculum for citizenship education in the UK.

The activities in each set help young people to develop democratic citizenship competences which were crucial for approaching confidently aspects of the 21st century: identity, learning to learn, learning to live together, responsibility towards personal well-being, personal and professional development, protection of the environment, social protection and sustainable development. Activities in the handbook were based on Articles in the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The set of materials included guidelines for the development of communication and language competences in a variety of democratic citizenship contexts.

This course targets, but was not restricted to, upper secondary students, aged 15-18. It was primarily designed for use in mainstream educational classes within the ‘Personal and Career guidance’ strand. It was also used as part of school-based curriculum classes within the “Man and Society" and "Language and Communication" strands:

A series of training seminars for teachers using the education for democratic citizenship materials followed the publication of Together.
