Apart from my grades, what other factors are important for British institutions?

It is worth noting that in the British system the selection of candidates is based on a general profile of each individual and not just on an applicant's grades. As such, good grades are no guarantee that an applicant will be offered a place on a course.

There is a part on the application form where the candidate has to write about their reasons for choosing the course and for studying in the UK, assessing motivation and vocation in this way. This statement is called a 'Personal Statement' and you will find information and instructions by searching the UCAS student site index in 'P | Personal statement'. With the words 'personal+statement+uk', 'personal+statement+study area+uk' or 'personal+statement+ucas' you can find examples on the Internet. We advise you not to copy these examples but use them only as a guide or model. It is recommended that you consult the institution's web site in order to gain some insight about the profile that they expect for each course.

On the same form you will find another space for a text that is written by one of your secondary teachers that teaches a subject related to the one you wish to study, or your form tutor, tutor or a university teacher. Those candidates over 21, who haven't studied for some time, can include a professional rather than a school reference. This text is called a 'Reference' and you should search the UCAS student site index in 'R | Reference: guidance on obtaining a reference'.

We recommend that you consult the individual pages of the different institutions that offer the courses, in order to check if they require professional experience and/or if they attach importance to voluntary work.
