CLI is a programme of activities which facilitates leadership networking and exchange in the broader cultural sector. The program assists future leaders in the cultural sector to develop ideas, skills, and networks, thus helping them to drive the sector forward and ensure its relevance to the changing societies around it. By developing leadership competencies and networks, the programme will enable further international and intercultural engagement between cultural individuals and organisations in the UK and other regions of the world, and also facilitates inter-regional activity.
This year we have 14 participants from different organisations in both the UAE and Saudi Arabia. They have started their leadership journey by attending the Leadership Development Workshop in Beirut last September. Along with peers from Lebanon, Syria, Palestine Territories, Egypt and the UK, the participants explored the basic concept of leadership in the cultural sector. They were introduced to the different definitions and styles of leadership and were familiarised with the tools in cultural leadership.
Equipped with the understanding and knowledge gained on leadership, these future leaders were then encouraged to look at and assess their own leadership capacity, identifying in the process their development needs and professional goals. As a result of this, a Professional Development Plan is then produced by each participant outlining the means they would go about to address and achieve their goals.
As part of the programme, the British Council will support the participants in carrying out their plans based on available opportunities. These opportunities will take the form of placements, training courses, mentorship schemes and residencies to take place either locally, regionally or in the UK.
Also a significant part of the learning experience is the action learning sessions that the participants will regularly have to take part in. Action-Learning is a process whereby small groups of people working at similar levels develop themselves and their organisations through jointly examining the work situations they each face. The participants present their major challenges and dilemmas to the others and the group works on what is effectively a live case study. The techniques enable the group to challenge, support and assist the individual to identify their own solutions.
On December 9th and 10th all participants will meet again in London to take part in the International Symposium on Leadership. Partnering with the Cultural Leadership Programme and the Clore Leadership Programme, the symposium will provide a platform of seminars and discussion groups of innovators to explore and reinforce the ability of cultural leaders to respond positively and imaginatively to social, economic, technical and environmental challenges, and to influence the future.
