Developing dialogue and building networks between young leaders in the UK and South East Europe.
Aim of the Forum
The aim of the Forum is to create greater understanding and engagement between the UK and the countries in South East Europe (South East Europe), and within South East Europe. The Forum will also contribute towards greater stability and prosperity in South East Europe, and eventually to the region's integration within the European Union.
The willingness amongst countries in South East Europe to build regional co-operation is a key factor to success on the road to reform and integration. Although some progress has been made, the conflicts of the past decade have scarred several generations, and have built barriers to communication, travel, cultural and business exchanges. There is still a strong need for more intra-regional dialogue, and the UK can play a valuable facilitating role in rebuilding further the trust between nationalities, ethnic and religious groups.
Core activity group
The core activity group of the Forum will be young leaders (between 120-140 people) working in politics, government, media, education, civil society organisations, business, culture and the arts in the UK and the countries of South East Europe. They will be brought together into an active network to debate issues of common concern in the above areas. They will work together to develop projects for change in their areas of expertise. The project will also be expected to attract co-operation and funding from partners in the region working to the same objectives.
The debate, discussions, and action through the Forum will be defined by the Forum themes. At the inception stage they will be set as a broad framework only and will serve the dual purpose of providing a base for the selection of participants, and initiating dialogue in the Forum network. We will expect the participants to channel or redefine the themes in the process of work. The Forum themes are:
people and politicsWe aim to create an active network of young leaders that will be operational for the two years duration of the Forum, and will continue to exist after the active phase of the project. The networking will be facilitated through a series of landmark conferences, online communities and other face-to-face and virtual meetings organised between October 2003 and October 2005.
