Advice for Vietnamese students and their parents following recent outbreaks of civil disturbances in the UK

Is it safe for my child to travel to the UK to commence their studies?

• there has not been any travel warnings to the UK.  We advise all students embarking to the UK to ensure that they liaise with their enrolled institutions on accommodation and airport pick-up arrangements prior to arrival.  

Are international students going to be safe studying in the UK?

• the UK is a safe country and the riots are isolated incidents.  We advise all students to travel in a group, remain vigilant and avoid areas where they feel they might be unsafe.  International offices in the respective educational institutions are able to offer advice on what to do and where to go for daily necessity.  

What precautions are being done to protect international students studying in the UK?

• the UK takes the issue of safety for everyone in the UK including international students very seriously. The government has committed to do everything necessary to restore order to Britain's streets and to make them safe. The government will do everything necessary to strengthen and assist police forces across the country that are meeting this disorder.  Everyone in the UK needs to remain vigilant and avoid areas where they feel they might be unsafe

Where is it safest to study in the UK?

• the UK is a safe country and as mentioned, the riots are isolated incidents.  A recent survey of our returned alumni conducted recently indicated that our alumni found the UK offers a safe study environment.  Like all places in the world, we will advise students or any travellers to apply common sense to their personal safety and to remain vigilant.

The UK government, together with the British Council and other related organisations work closely together to ensure that the experience of all international students in the United Kingdom is a safe and rewarding one.  

The British Council has published brochures for international students called Creating Confidence and First Steps Guide which provides guidance for new students on how to look after themselves and their belongings when they arrive in the UK and what to do in case of an emergency.
