Climate Train

Since July 2005 there has been a train service between Thessaloniki and Istanbul. The train leaves Thessaloniki arrives in Istanbul after twelve hours of journey.

Building upon the train journey between two countries, Turkish and Greek Climate Advocates jointly organised a series of awareness raising activities around climate change issues.

A number of Greek Climate Advocates boarded the train and headed to Istanbul from Thessaloniki through Alexandroupoli, Soufli delivering a series of activities in-the train and at platforms. They were joined by Turkish Climate Advocates in Istanbul. A full group made of Turkish and Greek Advocates delivered activities at Sirkeci and Haydarpaşa Train Stations to raise awareness of the climate change issues. On the way back to Thessaloniki, Greek Advocates were joined by Turkish Advocates to replicate similar activities at Greek side.

Climate change activities
At Sirkeci and Haydarpaşa, they interacted with the local community of around 600. The visitors not only gained information and exposed themselves with scientific and fun experiments on climate change but also had a chance to raise their ideas and suggestions on this hot topic. There was great interest from non-governmental organisations and media members. There happened two live broadcast at NTV and CNN Türk Tv channels and radio programmes at TRT FM, TRT 1, TRT Turkey’s Voice channels.
