The EU and Turkey: Drifting Apart?

The British Council, Centre for European Reform (CER) and Turkish Economic and Social Studies Foundation (TESEV) have jointly organised the fourth Bosphorus Conference on EU-Turkey relations. This high-level, invitation-only conference took place in Istanbul on 5-6 October 2007.

Among the participants of this year’s conference were Ali Babacan, Mehmet Şimşek, Hilmi Güler, Olli Rehn, Carl Bildt, Neil Kinnock, and many other senior figures to discuss the politics and economics of Turkish accession.

This year’s conference opened on the evening of 5 October with a gala dinner and the keynote speeches of Carl Bildt, Olli Rehn and Mehmet Şimşek. The main seminar on the 6th emphasised frank, off-the-record discussion of some of the most important and controversial aspects of EU-Turkey relations. This year, the conference focused on the following issues:

Do Turkey and the EU have a joint vision for Europe?
The EU, Turkey and the Middle East
Economic integration and energy
