Rupert Everett to receive an award at !f Istanbul
In collaboration with British Council, the acclaimed British actor Rupert Everett will attend the 11th !f Istanbul International Independent Film Festival, which runs February 16-26, 2012, where he will be honoured for his contributions to cinema. The ‘Cinema For a Better World’ award aims to recognise individuals who have contributed, via cinema, towards a world in which no-one need compromise the truth of who they are.
Everett to present the landmark movie, Zenne
In Istanbul, Everett will also present a special screening of the Turkish film Zenne Dancer, which is based on the real life story of Ahmet Yıldız, a 26-year-old gay man who was murdered by his father in an ‘honor killing’. The film is ground-breaking because it is the first time issues like gay rights and a culture of secrecy around sexuality have been addressed in mainstream Turkish cinema. Everett was in Istanbul filming a television documentary on Lord Byron when he became aware of the murder of Ahmet Yıldız and publicly condemned it.

Adapting Sebald for the Screen:
In Conversation with Grant Gee
The German writer WG Sebald (1944 – 2001) was one of the most iconic authors of the last century, influencing many well-known artists and writers, from Patti Smith to Adam Phillips. It takes courage to adapt such a singular book to the screen. Director Grant Gee is best known for his award-winning music documentaries about groups like Radiohead and Joy Division. In Patience (After Sebald), a former publisher of the late author shares the difficulty he had assigning a genre to The Rings of Saturn, Sebald's landmark book that mixes history, travelogue, memoir, meditation, fiction and images, so how did he get into Sebald? Is it fiction, non-fiction, travel, or history? When did he first encounter Sebald's writing? What were the challenges involved in adapting Rings of Saturn to cinema?
Join us to explore these and other questions in conversation with Grant Gee, moderated by the Turkish writer Emre Ayvaz.
