We aim to reinforce the teaching of English, working with teachers to develop and promote the use of new teaching methods through ICT.
Information and communication technology (ICT)
We are working with the Ministry of Education and Training to enhance English Clubs in primary schools through providing self-access training materials to help the primary school teachers develop their English. Teachers from our teaching centre will be running training sessions in collaboration with Tunisian English language trainers. We also offer workshops for secondary education teachers of English who will act as trainers for the Tunisian team of ELT pedagogic assistants.
competitions
We run competitions for secondary school pupils. The purpose is to help young Tunisians develop their language skills and a better understanding of UK daily life and how cultural differences influence it. Competitions involve either writing a short story, drawing a picture or answering a quiz 'National ELT quiz'. In the recent competition 'Multicultural Britain' the first six winners went on a two-week English course in the UK. There were also many other prizes such as English language courses at our centre, dictionaries and books.
Seminars
We offer school professionals the opportunity to attend seminars in Tunisia or the UK to help develop their skills in areas such as: learning languages in primary schools. We also help inspectors, pedagogic advisers and “professeurs formateurs” develop their skills to lead distance learning seminars for secondary teachers of English.
If you're a secondary school teacher of English and would like to know more about our support to the development of English language teaching at primary and secondary education level, please contact us.
ELT Regional Project
On Tuesday 30th May, the Tunisian launch of the NENA ( Near East and North Africa) Regional ELT project took place at CENAFFE, (Centre National de Formation des Formateurs en Education) The three year project, which is part of the British Council’s programme in the Near East and North Africa region, is being run in collaboration with the Ministries of Education in Tunisia, Syria, Morocco and Lebanon.
The project aims to equip secondary school English teachers with the skills needed to exploit internet-based teaching resources. Here in Tunisia, the first phase of the project is already underway. It’s a series of six workshops for teacher trainers, designed to provide them with regionally developed training materials, which can then be used in training sessions for teachers. The 3rd & 4th workshops in the series will also be taking place at CENAFFE, along side the launch, from the 30th to 31st May. These workshops will highlight using the internet to teach listening skills and pronunciation.
