INTERNATIONAL INSPIRATION TOCO & EAST MUCURAPO SECONDARY YOUNG LEADERS REPRESENT T&T AT THE UK SCHOOL GAMES

The British High Commissioner joined British Council staff to congratulate International Inspiration Young Leaders Sebastian Hector (15) from Mucurapo East Secondary School, and Eleisha Serapio (15) from Toco Secondary School, at their UK School Games orientation at the British Council on 24 August.

Sebastian and Eleisha were selected by the British Council from dozens of International Inspiration Young Leaders to represent their schools and Trinidad and Tobago at the UK School Games in Sheffield from the 1 – 4 September.  They will join hundreds of other Young Leader volunteers from the UK and around the world in helping to run the UK School Games, an annual event that has special significance this year with under 340 days to go until the London 2012 Olympics.

The UK School Games is a multi-sport event for 1,600 elite athletes of school age, competing across ten sports, with disability events in athletics, swimming and table tennis. It includes opening and closing ceremonies and an athletes’ village to replicate the environment of a major sporting event, such as the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

At the Games, the Young Leaders will receive training and experience in leadership, volunteering, child protection and welfare, national governing body accreditation, event management, press operations and athlete support, while also improving their understanding of other cultures, sharing experiences, developing relationships and formulating action plans to use their new skills and expertise back in their home country.

The British High Commissioner, Arthur Snell, praised Sebastian and Eleisha for being selected, and for their commitment to raising awareness of the power of sport and inclusiveness through their involvement in International Inspiration’s Youth Sport Leader programme.

During a question and answer session at the briefing, UK School Games volunteer alumni Hakeem Charles, Sheriece Correia and Diandra Joseph told the new volunteers what to expect when they get the UK.  Perhaps their best piece of advice:  wear extra thick socks because it’s freezing cold!

International Inspiration uses the power of sport to transform the lives of young people of all abilities world-wide, through high quality and inclusive physical education, sport and play. It represents a promise made by the UK in its bid for the 2012 Olympics to leave behind a legacy that would see 12 million children in twenty countries, engaged in sport for development activities that would inspire confidence and build young leaders.

International Inspiration Youth Sport Leadership Training Workshop

In July 2011, the British Council facilitated a workshop for 25 Sport Development Officers from the Ministry of Sport and 28 new Young Leaders as part of International Inspiration’s flagship project to develop young peoples’ leadership skills through sport.  It wasn’t all hard work in the classroom, though, and the Young Leaders got to get their own back on the volleyball court!

The workshop and practical activities focused on problem solving and overcoming challenges as a team and, ultimately, helped the young leaders to develop the skills they need to organise and run sporting events and to inspire other young people to participate in sport. Additionally they learnt about paralympic sport and working with persons with disabilities.

Over 460 secondary school students have been trained under the program to date, and are making a difference in their schools and local communities as they set up their own sports clubs and plan and run their own events.  The students are also inspiring other enthusiastic young leaders by cascading what they’ve learned to their peers.

Under the Youth Sport Leadership program, two Young Leaders have been selected to attend the UK School Games at the end of August, where they will volunteer in activities to help deliver the Games and mix with other Young Leaders from around the world.

International Inspiration Fun Festival

A mix of fun and determination to win were the order of the day when a group of Young Leaders (The Young Leaders put what they learned at the workshop into practice and) helped deliver a fantastic Fun Festival for primary school children at the Jean Pierre Complex on 29 July 2011.

Trained under International Inspiration’s Youth Sport Leadership Training program to organise and run sporting events, the Young Leaders ensured that the day went without a hitch, and the British Council was proud to have helped facilitate an event which showed the children just how much fun sport can be.  Just as importantly, the day was a huge confidence boost for the Young Leaders, who proved to themselves that their age is no bar to making things happen.
