Young Thai IP Law Ambassador award winners 2006

As with many East Asian countries, pirating of Intellectual Property is a major problem. British Council, in partnership with the Central Intellectual Property and International Trade Court, the National Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology and True Visions, are targeting tomorrow’s lawyers to try to deal with the issue. Following a gruelling national competition, including a knockout mock trial in a real court (in which ‘Man United FC’ fought ‘Man U Pub & Restaurant’ in Bangkok for trademark infringement), our two Young Thai IP Law Ambassadors went to the UK, whose strength in IP goes back over a hundred years, to claim their prize. Over the course of a fortnight they experienced a work attachment with top IP law firm Rouse & Co International, and met key practitioners from many IP institutions such as the UK Intellectual Property Office, Institute for Public Policy Research, Copyright Licensing Agency, Own-It, and IP academics from various universities e.g. Brunel University, Queen Mary University, University of Westminster and London Metropolitan University. In addition they attended a conference organised for IP postgraduate students from five universities in Europe. Both winners certainly gained a great deal of invaluable knowledge and experience for their future career from this visit and will share what they have learned about IP in the UK with their peers.
