Professional Development Opportunities

Global School Partnerships can provide opportunities for teachers' continuing professional development.

WORKSHOPS
The British Council Sri Lanka GSP team holds a number of workshops to promote the global school partnership programme in Sri Lanka and to provide the necessary guidance and advice for schools on establishing a sustainable learning partnership.

For schools just started or hoping to start a partnership:

Introduction to Global School Partnerships
This workshop covers the principles, educational benefits and feasibility of global school partnerships. A local school with an established Global School Partnership will also share their experience. This workshop is for teachers that are considering starting a learning partnership or who have just initiated such a partnership with a UK school.

For schools with established Global School Partnerships:

Building Effective Partnerships
This workshop explores the motivation for equity based partnership and examines relationships between colleagues who work in differently resourced teaching environments. The workshop is for teachers who have been actively involved in partnerships – particularly those who have visited their partner school and/or hosted visitors.

Global Education in Partnerships
This workshop explores the opportunities for collaborative curricular work with global education themes. The workshop is for teachers who wish to develop a global dimension through joint curricular work with colleagues in partner schools.

Participation in these workshops are only by invitation from the GSP team in Sri Lanka.

The teachers who participate in this course are expected to assist young Sri Lankans to become active, involved citizens who can make sense of their world. Their schools should be socially just, so that all students understand and acknowledge the value of cultural and linguistic diversity, and possess the knowledge, skills and understanding to contribute to and benefit from, such diversity in the Sri Lankan community and internationally’.

INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL AWARD
The British Council International School Award (ISA) is an accreditation scheme that recognises and celebrates exemplary practices of internationalism in schools. ISA encourages schools to collaborate and innovate with overseas schools to create a rich learning experience for students through the use of information technology, creative pedagogical practices and real context for learning.

Schools that participate in ISA begin by drafting an action plan for the academic year of activities with international dimension covering a range of subject areas and age groups. The schools record their work and present a dossier of evidence that is assessed by a panel. Schools that are successful in meeting the assessment criteria are awarded the accreditation for a period of three years.

ISA was introduced in Sri Lanka in 2005. Since the inception of the project in Sri Lanka, 30 GSP schools have received the ISA This year (2011), 26 schools received the ISA at an award presentation ceremony held on Saturday 9 April 2011, at the Earls Regency Hotel, Kandy. Nine schools who are among these award winners are GSP schools.
