PROJECT IN BRIEF
Focus Professional development for in-service teacher trainers and teachers
PROJECT OVERVIEW
The project's aim was to increase the number of trained trainers able to deliver methodology workshops in task based, learner centred, communicative English language teaching to teachers at secondary school (Grades 5 – 11) and to establish a sustainable training system that could be maintained at education zone level after the end of the project. Increasing the pool of qualified trainers was considered as a first step towards raising standards in English language teaching and learning. By extension this would increase community access to higher education, the job market, and links with other communities.
The project was designed in a series of cascades, building the skills of the trainer-trainers, and the teacher trainers who were TELT's target groups, on an on-going basis, while at the same time putting substantial numbers of English language teachers through a ten day methodology course.
In each cascade the Senior Teachers took more and more responsibility for the planning and delivery of the training sessions, so that by the end they were running whole teacher training courses themselves, in teams. In tandem with their development, the Master Trainers took less and less of a direct delivery role and became mentors, assisting and advising with planning, delivery and follow up needs of Senior Teachers. The ten day courses lay a strong foundation for teachers to build core skills from. TELT's provision of in-service training is as a face-to-face course with on-going school based follow up organised at zone level.
31 master trainers, 99 senior teachers and 970 teachers received direct training on the programme.
The materials were published and are used not only in the North and East Province but other parts of Sri Lanka.
WHAT THE STAKEHOLDERS SAY
'The British Council should be praised – they are one of the few organisations to continue to work in this region.'
Mr Selvaratnam, Zonal Director of Education
'I have fond memories of the British Council’s first programme in Jaffna in the late 70s. The British Council involvement support over nearly 40 years has been a major motivating factor in sustaining the commitment to English language teaching in the region. This project has gone even further to develop strong links between communities.'
Mr Thiagarajah, Assistant Director of Education (English) Ministry of Education
'We thought the workshops were Fantastic!! Well done!!!'
