Impact 28 master trainers, 250 teachers, 20 thousand pupils
Dates September 2009 - June 2010

PROJECT OVERVIEW
In May 2009, The British Council was invited by the British High Commission to devise a programme for teachers in the North and East who have not had access to quality training during the conflict. The BHC is keen to help learners use English as a link language to promote intercultural understanding.

The British Council is training 24 educational professionals from Jaffna and Trincomalee as Master Trainers for a newly designed course Classroom Language. This course aims to improve the English language proficiency and confidence in using English in the classroom of teachers.  It also explores ways of maximising student speaking time in lessons to ensure they benefit fully from English lessons..

The programme consists of:

a 30-hour classroom language teacher training component
a 10-hour English grammar self-study component
a 10-hour ‘helping students speak component
a 15-hour trainer training course
a 10-hour mentor training course

EXPECTED OUTCOMES

greater use of English as a link language so as to enable communities in Jaffna and Trincomalee to forge links educationally, socially and economically with other parts of the country
Jaffna and Trincomalee better prepared through use of Englishto leverage expected upturn in tourism to Sri Lanka

WHAT THE STAKEHOLDERS SAY
'The people of Jaffna and other parts of the North and East have suffered for many years due to the conflict. Now is the time to support their social and economic development and help these areas become the vibrant and thriving places they once were. While Bridges are a physical means of connecting Jaffna to the rest of Sri Lanka; English language training provides opportunities for connecting the people of Jaffna and Trinco to the wider world'
His Excellency Dr Peter Hayes, British High Commissioner

'We are so grateful to the British Council for providing very high quality training in Trincomallee'
Mr S Thandayuthapani. Provincial Director of Education, Trincomalee Provincial Council

'I became aware of useful ways of building confidence in our classroom teaching'
