Cambridgeshire Primary School Teachers’ Visit to Sri Lanka

Teachers International Professional Development (TIPD)

What is Teacher’s International Professional Development (TIPD)?
TIPD: provides  for UK teachers to experience good educational practice in different countries of the world. The programme creates networks of school teachers and local authorities (Zonal or Provincial Education Office equivalent) in England, who work in partnership to examine models of good practice.

They engage and share in professional dialogue with colleagues across the world and discover that what happens in their classroom can be influenced by positive examples from overseas.

First TIPD visit in Sri Lanka: theme 'Citizenship'
Ten primary schools (age group 5 -11years) from the Cambridgeshire region visited Sri Lanka from 22 – 30 July with an aim of sharing good practice of the teaching of Citizenship in schools. Mainly to study the extent to which – and how – the school ensures that the pupils:

become informed, thoughtful and responsible citizens who are aware of their rights and responsibilities
are provided with an education which promotes spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, making them more self-confident and responsible both in and beyond the classroom
are encouraged to play a helpful part in the life of their schools, neighbourhoods, communities and the wider world
are taught about the economy and democratic institutions and values; encouraged to have respect for different national, religious and ethnic identities; pupils’ ability to reflect on issues and take part in discussions

Programme for the UK schools
On the first day they were given a briefing on the School Education System in Sri Lanka by Director of Primary Education Mrs. Asoka Pandithasekara ,Ministry of Education Sri Lanka.

Under this scheme the group of UK teachers visited the following schools

Bishops' College Colombo
Nalanda College Colombo
St. Pauls’ Girls’ School, Milagiriya, Colombo
Mahanaga Maha Vidyalaya, Kegalle
Kegalle Vidyalaya, Kegalle
Trinity College, Junior School, Kandy

Second TIPD visit in Sri Lanka -theme "Listening and Speaking
Tweleve secondary and primary schools form Sourthern UK Devon visited following selected schools in the southern belt of Sri Lanka

Welithara Muslim Mahavidyalaya, Balapitya
Sripathi Maha Vidyalaya, Balapitya
Kularatne Maha Vidyalaya, Balapitiya
Mahinda College, Galle
St Aloysius College, Galle
