Seminars and workshops on Entrepreneurship

A day of short seminars and interactive workshops was held on Tuesday 25th November 2008 at BMICH Colombo as the second day of NEW 08. It was participated in by close to 350 students from Universities and Technical and Vocational schools around the country.

The seminars were conducted by the knowledge partners mainly by discussing case studies on enterprise experience of the undergraduates and graduates from the UK who took part in NEW 08. They presented their enterprise experiences and the how their universities support them to start and develop enterprises.

SUMMARY POINTS

  1. Most Sri Lankan undergraduates are not aware of ‘enterprise education’ and its importance
  2. In most Sri Lankan universities enterprise related study modules are limited to business and management faculties
  3. Although undergraduates develop innovative products during their research they are not able to commercialise them due to university regulatory issues such as shared intellectual property
3.1.  Students from TVET schools are poor in English language communication when compared to the university undergraduates
  4. UK undergraduates are greatly facilitated through university incubators in starting-up enterprises
  5. UK undergraduates are advantaged from their cross-disciplinary studies because they are able to explore fields other than their main course of study

CALL FOR ACTION

  1. Develop a common, compulsory module on ‘entrepreneurship’ for all undergraduate courses in Sri Lanka
  2. Sri Lankan universities to facilitate spin-offs in terms of regulatory, policy and practical support
  3. Sri Lankan universities to establish incubators
  4. TVET schools to launch rapid English training programme

Norfolk Foods (Pvt) Ltd co-sponsored the seminar as the Seminar Partner. Norfolk Foods is a British/Sri Lankan Joint Venture Project in Food manufacturing that offers a wide range of superior quality meat, poultry, fish and vegetable products. Mohamed Ziauddin, Managing Director, Norfolk Foods addressed the students on the topic of What Must You Learn to Become a Successful Entrepreneur – The Norfolk Story.
