Weather around the world

Background
Students of Sangabodhi College, Nittambuwa Sri Lanka & Wilstead Lower School in Bedford, exchanged weather data within a given period mainly to gain knowledge of the weather around the World and how it affected their society.

Objectives
The main objective of this project was to make the students aware of the diverse climatic conditions globally and its impact on lifestyle, culture, farming, tourism, plants and animals of various countries.

Activities
Local students collected data on temperature, rainfall & wind speed in Sri Lanka. The UK students gathered similar data in Bedford – UK and furthermore in Florida and New York mainly from newspapers and TV news. Data was collected for a month’s duration.

Outcome
By comparing and contrasting the information collected by both schools they identified that the UK is the coldest and Sri Lanka is the warmest. On the other hand the weather in Florida was a lot different to New York though both states are from North America . for example. in Florida on Tuesday 8 March 2005 it was about 23c and in New York it was about 0c. The rainfall in Florida on Wednesday 5 March 2005 was about 12mm of rain but in New York it was 0mm.

Local and UK students discussed through emails how the weather affects  lifestyle, farming, tourism, plants and animals

Students discovered Florida is warm because it is partly in the tropical and temperate climatic zone and New York is cold. According to the data analysis students saw a seasonal variation in Florida,New York and UK which contrasts to Sri Lanka.

Impact
One of the major impacts of the project  is the students gaining awareness on diverse climatic conditions globally and how it affects  lifestyle, farming, tourism, plants and animals.

Both school students got an opportunity to compare and contrast the various equipment used to measure the weather data too.
