Background
Mahmud Ladies College - Kalmunai, Wales High School - Sheffield and Al Azhar Vidyalaya – Mawanalle had an Art exhibition recently on the 2004 tsunami. The partnership is a three-way link and among the partners, Kalmunai Mahmud Ladies College has been a casualty in the tsunami.
Objectives
The main objective of this exhibition was to make the students aware of the tsunami and its influence on communities. In addition, enabling the victimized students to express and share their feelings, emotions and experiences was another intention of having this exhibition. It is clear to us in our experience that allowing expression is a way to reduce stress.
Activities
Initially, the three schools conducted an art competition in their respective schools and selected the best forty-five images featuring the tsunami. Accordingly, fifteen drawings from each school were chosen to be exhibited.
Furthermore, students of Kalmunai Mahmud Ladies College articulated their own experiences in different literary structures such as poems, short stories, letters, essays and sketches. They also interviewed a few victims of this catastrophic incident.
After this, a group of students from Mahmud Ladies College visited the area and took some photographs, while another group collected some video materials on the tsunami in the area.

an exhibition was conducted in all three schools - Wales High School – Sheffield, Al Azhar Vidyalaya – Mawanalle and Mahmud Ladies College – Kalmunai respectively.
Impact
One of the major impacts is that the art exhibition has brought about a strong link among the three schools. In addition, it has created awareness on this specific natural disaster. Further, the children from Mahmud Ladies College said that they felt relieved by drawing and painting those pictures.
Awarding of certificates and badges, appreciation by teachers, parents and their colleagues has also resulted in interest, encouragement, enthusiasm and stimulation in the minds of the young artists.
Wales High School collected some money from its own students as well as students of Ferham Junior Infant school and assisted Mahmud Ladies College financially. The exhibition also enabled students and teachers to interact with and to learn mutually from those of the partner schools from different countries and cultures.
