Music

From electronica to jazz and classical to indie, we work across all genres of music. The British Council's Music team in London works with our overseas network of arts managers and partners to plan, resource, deliver and evaluate high-impact arts projects involving professional artists and organisations from the UK. We aim to strengthen the international profile of UK music and creativity, to communicate the diversity of UK society, and to establish long-term partnerships overseas. The Music team in London also has its own weekly radio show, The Selector. The Selector is a two-hour radio show featuring the best in contemporary UK music, across all styles. It reflects the brilliance and diversity of British music, promoting to the world the new sounds, talents and musical culture of modern Britain. The aim is to challenge people’s perceptions about the UK and showcase the wealth of creativity and innovation on offer here. It’s currently broadcasted in over 30 countries and has built up a loyal audience worldwide. British Council Sri Lanka seeks to introduce this radio show to its Sri Lankan audiences in the near future. For more information on ‘The Selector’ radio show visit www.selector-radio.com.

Our Aims and Objectives
Our global arts team works with the best of British creative talent to develop innovative, high-quality events and collaborations that link thousands of artists and cultural institutions around the world, drawing them into a closer relationship with the UK.

Who Is Our Target Audience?
Young adults - roughly defined as being aged between 16 and 35. This is the age group that research indicates is most willing to countenance changing its impressions of another country and culture. We also frequently engage with older and younger audiences, depending on the population demographic in a particular country.

What Works Where?
What we programme in particular countries depends very much on audience taste, considerations of language, current perceptions of the UK, any need for developmental work and the cultural situation locally. Our UK arts team and arts managers in each region have extensive knowledge of all of these things and continually update this knowledge through dialogue with our partners, advisors and contacts.
