Young Fashion Entrepreneur 2011 award

Fashion Photography Workshop

by Sandun De Silva

A Fashion Photography Exhibition was held on 30 and 31 March 2011 at the Lionel Wendt (Harold Peiris Gallery), showcasing work done by the participants of the Fashion Photography Workshop conducted by the British Council. Out of the 24 participants, two were from the Maldives and one was Iranian.

This Fashion Photography Workshop was organised as part of British Council’s Young Creative Entrepreneur Programme, on 25, 26, 27 March 2011 and was held at the British Council Colombo conducted by Sandun De Silva. The workshop covered topics ranging from “Theory and Ethics”, “Practical work”, and “Post-production and Finishing” in Fashion Photography.

Nonita Kalra, Editor-in-chief of Elle Magazine India also contributed to this workshop on 27 March. She provided a broad overview of the Indian fashion industry, emerging designers, creation of portfolios, and insight into how they pick the photos to enhance Elle magazine’s reputation.

Feedback received from participants were positive: “It was an eye opener, Sandun was an excellent teacher, he was very helpful and taught us all what we needed to know. All in all it was really great that the British Council gave all of us opportunity to take part and develop our skills", said Dilshan Farook.

Another participant, Shifani Reffai said, “I want to thank British Council and Sandun for the workshop, it was amazing and fun and I learnt a lot. I think it's got me way more prepared in terms of client based photography.”

Nonita also reflected on her experience in contributing to the workshop. She said, “It was a pleasure to be in Sri Lanka for the British Council Fashion Photography Workshop. I was very impressed with the willingness to learn displayed by the contestants. While their talent is raw at the moment, I am confident that tomorrow's big names in photography & design will come from Sri Lanka.”
