Contemporary UK drama is more vibrant than ever before. With everything from new writing and live art to classical texts and physical theatre testing the boundaries of the theatrical form, the drama scene is thriving. Here’s where to find out all about it.
Our Arts team work across all forms of drama – from live art and physical/visual theatre to classic and text-based drama and they work with our overseas network of arts managers and partners to plan, resource, deliver and evaluate high-impact arts projects involving professional artists and organisations from the UK.
British Council Sri Lanka aims to showcase the UK’s dynamism in drama in Sri Lanka by working in partnership and collaborating with local groups and individuals in Sri Lanka to reach Young Audiences and Future Leaders.
How We Work in Drama
We work with the best of British and Sri Lankan creative talent to develop innovative, high-quality drama events and collaborations that link artists and cultural institutions in the UK, drawing them into a closer relationship with Sri Lanka. SL being a multi-ethnic country, many of our projects address diversity, are collaborative and multilingual, showcase opportunity for ‘inclusiveness’ and promote ‘communication’ between Sinhala, Tamil and English speakers, and include the use of sign-language.
Funding
We are not an 'arts funding body' in the straightforward sense, which means that we do not support artists and companies solely or even primarily for the purpose of developing those artists and companies. However, we do give support in other ways; providing a contact network, information and some tour management.

Performance in Profile
Performance in Profile is the British Council’s guide to UK companies and artists currently creating interesting work available for international touring. As ever, we are keen that British artists not only find opportunities to tour finished pieces but also to conduct workshops, create educational programmes and collaborate with their peers. Most of the companies included here are extremely versatile performers and enthusiastic for engagement with international audiences and artists.
