The British Council’s environmental policy shows our commitment to reducing our impact on the environment.
We are doing this by using internationally recognised environmental management tools, which are adapted and managed to meet our unique structure.
IN SRI LANKA
We follow the British Council Environmental Framework Tool (EFT), in our offices in Colombo and Kandy. The EFT provides a structured framework of five levels from awareness to leadership. The EFT provides management guidance with an overall aim to reduce our global environmental impact. Sri Lanka is the first overseas office in the world to have achieved Level 3. This means we have calculated our carbon footprint baseline figure (by using our figures from measurements of our electricity, water, paper, waste, and travel over the year 2009-2010, to count how many cubic tonnes of carbon we put out into the environment in a year). We had to fulfil other criteria to attain this status, such as encourage our vendors to follow environmentally friendly practices, give staff awareness raising workshops, recycling our paper and making files and notepads from it among other things.
