Active Citizens in youth communities

2010 - 2011

In 2010-2011 British Council implemented the Active Citizens programme in youth communities in partnership with the New Horizons Foundation. The beneficiaries were young people from Iaşi, Neamţ, Hunedoara, Mehedinţi, Cluj and Timiş counties.

The project had three main components:

Training

The British Council, in partnership with New Horizons Foundation, organised a Training of Trainers on the theme of active citizenship for 15 facilitators (school psychologists, teachers, IMPACT youth clubs coordinators), from the six counties mentioned above. The training took place between 1-6 September 2010, in Miercurea Ciuc and the participants learned methods of non-formal education through which they can transmit the concept of active citizenship to the youth they are working with. Moreover, the participants received information about the steps needed to write a social action project in the benefit of the community.

After that, the 15 facilitators delivered a number of 10 local trainings attended by 160 participants (teachers, school psychologists, IMPACT club leaders, representatives of non-governmental organisations and of public local authorities). All of them received certificates of community facilitators.

The 160 community facilitators cascaded the information to the young beneficiaries they were working with, within the youth clubs, schools, local NGOs etc. They taught at least 1000 young people what active citizenship means and how to become responsible in addressing the problems that affect their communities.

Projects in the benefit of the communities, written by the young people

Apart from the training component, the project had a practical component as well: the young people had the chance to apply the knowledge gained in the trainings and to effectively write down social action projects in the benefit of their communities. The British Council organised a project competition at the end of which the 13 best projects were financed. 39 projects developed by the IMPACT clubs entered the competition.

International Exchange

As part of the exchange component, the youth community from Romania was linked with a similar community from the UK (the beneficiaries of the non-governmental organisation Together4Peace from Leeds). As a result of this cooperation, in May-June 2011, a delegation of 10 young people from the UK came to Romania for a one-week visit, a period in which they got acquainted with the actions of the active citizens in the country. Likewise, a delegation of young people who actively participated in the Active Citizens project in Romania visited, for a week, the community in Leeds. In this manner, we helped develop a network of “active citizens”, globally connected and locally involved.
