Active Citizens in multi-ethnical communities

2010 - 2011

In 2010-2011 the British Council implemented the Active Citizens programme in multi-ethnical communities in partnership with Policy Centre for Roma and Minorities. The beneficiaries were people from the multi-ethnic community from the Ferentari neighbourhood of Bucharest, an area with a high percentage of Roma.

The project had three main components.

Training

The British Council, in partnership with Policy Centre for Roma and Minorities, delivered a training on the theme of active citizenship to 10 community facilitators from Ferentari neighbourhood. The training took place between the 14-17 October 2010, in Bucharest and brought together community leaders, teachers from School no. 136, young people involved in voluntary activities. The themes of the training were: identity analysis, community evaluation, community involvement. Additionally, the participants learned how to write a social action project for the benefit of the community.

Projects in the benefit of the community, written by the training participants

Apart from the training component, the project included a practical side as well: the participants had the chance to apply the knowledge they gained during the course and to write down social action projects in the benefit of their community, which were financed by the British Council.

International exchanges

In the frame of this component, the multi-ethnical community from Ferentari was linked to a similar community in Great Britain (beneficiaries of the ReachAbility non-governmental organisation from Oxford). As a consequence of this cooperation, in May-June 2011 a delegation of active citizens from Great Britain came to Romania for a one week visit. Likewise, a delegation of people who were actively involved in Active Citizens project in the neighbourhood of Ferentari had a one-week visit to the Oxford community. In this manner, we created a network of “active citizens” from multi-ethnical communities, locally involved and globally connected.
